Tree Planting

Trees allow us to breathe. Their respiration is what keeps us alive. They provide cover and shelter for a myriad of species. They have also provided mankind with numerous medicinal products. Trees are, in essence, valuable – and that value continues to grow as these magnificent examples of Mother Nature’s bounty carpet out planet.
So, we know that trees offer many benefits – and now we have taken them from the wild and brought them home – into our gardens. We now plant them in ever-increasing numbers due to any number of reasons. They provide us with shade and simple beauty when their leaves change from that green to the autumn hues we all love. But there is one thing that we all know and love – at the root of it, trees are simply good for the planet.
Counting the ways that trees are good for our planet is simply impossible – but here are some of the reasons we should make that extra effort to plant trees.

Greenhouse gasses have been implicated in global warming – and trees can help the planet keep well. Trees can help to absorb carbon dioxide, a Greenhouse gas that traps heat and which is a gas produced by our activities on the planet. Those same trees act as filters. According to widely accepted research, an individual tree can trap 22 kgs of carbon each year – while at the same time the cellulose in the leaves of that same tree returns oxygen to our planet’s atmosphere. This process can reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.

Trees also help to fight erosion. Their root systems keep soil healthy and in place. That function is essential to keeping natural environments pristine – and we can help by planting more trees. Without trees, the effects of erosion due to natural forces such as heat from the sun, wind, and water can damage the environment – soil is especially vulnerable.

Trees have one important function that simply cannot be ignored – they keep us alive by allowing us to breathe. trees, alongside marine algae (like seaweed), supply us with the oxygen that we need to simply carry on our daily business. They supply about one-fifth of that precious oxygen just by doing what they do – being the lungs of our planet. We need between 5 and 6 liters of oxygen per day to meet our daily needs – and that requires 22b trees – in other words, trees are essential. Without them, we could not draw breath.

Water is something we need as well – but without trees, water can swiftly become a problem. Runoff can become a flood. The roots of trees not only nourish their growth but stabilize the land where they take root. They are a natural sponges, filtering the water and removing pollutants from the environment. From the moment that water arrives from the clouds above us to the moment streams and rivers deliver that water to oceans and seas, trees are there to assure the purity of water.

Then there is the function of noise dampeners. Trees are not only wonderful to look at – but they also cancel out the effects of noise pollution. In large urban areas, noise can affect the quality of life of residents. Trees help – for instance, where city dwellers are close to highways, trees can reduce the amount of noise generated by those cars rushing by.

In short, we need to value trees. They are part and parcel of what makes nature so magnificent – and they allow things in the natural environment to thrive.

Take a moment to consider those green contributors, great and small, they are essential to our lives and the lives of every other living species on the planet. Conservation of this precious green resource is essential.
